What medium do you most like to work in?
I work across quite a few different mediums so that’s a tough call. They’re all great in their own ways. I love hand drawing because of the physical control but I’ve recently gotten very into mixed media work using a lot of digital elements because I needed a way to make art when I was broke and it has a kind of unpredictable, mash-up quality to it which I enjoy.
What are your thoughts about the medium of the paste-up?
I love it. This is the first time I’ve worked with paste ups and I’m definitely going to be using them more in the future. It’s quite an immediate medium which I like and it can combine so many elements I love from digital manipulation to painting and drawing. It also allows you to produce and reproduce large scale works quite easily which is great.
Tell us about your studio/where you make your art.
I make my art wherever I am honestly. I don’t have a set studio space at the moment. I’ve made art everywhere from friend’s balconies to nightclubs but in the times when I do need some sort of set up it’s usually me with a laptop, lots of “bad” pop music, paper, pens and paint everywhere and cigarettes. I always tell myself I’m going to start working in a more controlled environment but it never really happens. I’m pretty all over the place.
What will you be sending us for this year's PASTE MODERNISM?
I’m sending a few images I’ve worked on over the past few months and some created specifically for this show. I think the series is a good representation of the themes and messages that are reoccurring in my work. There’s zombies and popstars, I have one piece which kind of compares Disney to the sex trade. It’s all statements on modern pop culture and what we think, or rather what we are told is beautiful or desirable and juxtaposing that with the reality of what is actually going on.
What other projects/exhibitions/events are coming up for you soon?
I’m going to be speaking on a panel about celebrity culture and feminism at 2High Festival early next year and I’m in the early stages of planning my next solo show which I’m going to shop around. I’ve been doing a lot of work that incorporates gay porn and BDSM so that’s going to be super fun to flash around to people.
