Interview with CREON
Location: Sydney, Australia
What is the medium you most like to work in?
Although in the past I’ve tried and enjoyed all traditional mediums, the main mediums I use in my practice these days is acrylic and aerosols. In the near future I’d like to play around with two other medium formulas. The first is gouache over watercolour and the second is ‘prismacolour’ pencils over opaque high flow acrylic in airbrush.
What are your thoughts about the medium of the paste-up?
I love paste ups because you can just get yaself a big roll of paper and just take ya time in your studio to do ya thing on it then roll it up, chuck it in ya bag along with ya broom n bottle of paste (made out of ya secret recipe) then go out and quickly put it up for viewing. You can either do a picture, then cut around it (leaving a desired sized border) and then put it up on a wall somewhere. You can print off rolls of your design and effectively wall paper a masterpiece strip by strip, floor to ceiling over the whole damn wall.
Tell us about your studio/where you make your art.
I have just recently set up a studio space in my large bedroom at Anthony Listers studio in Sydney. We also have Ben Frost staying with us during the lead up to PM4. Before that i was sharing a space with Jodee Knowles. In my studio now I have a large drawing machine desk that i use for drawing, sketching or refining smaller paintings. it has a drafting mechanism with rotating set square rulers attached which is great for when i need to do any architectural plans for my building business. The desk can also be repositioned to anywhere from horizontal to vertical. I love it. My shelves of all my jars, brushes, pastels, charcoals, colic markers, inks n all that shit are kept next to a filing cabinet full of spray cans, tools and house paints etc. I always have a large wall or two for hanging the pieces that I’m working on and i always have floor space for when i stand on a stool to achieve large splatters.
What will you be sending us for this year's PASTE MODERNISM?
Last Paste Modernism I submitted an extra large piece that covered about 4-5 sqm. This year I plan to do around 3 sitting a little under half that size. My subject matter of late has been monsters n 'humorous horror' i guess. So i imagine these new works will continue from that. One idea I'm playing with is a vampire with syringes for fangs attacking a naked woman. I’m leaning more towards a sensual scene (typical of vampires) as apposed to a violent attack (typical of zombies).
What other projects/exhibitions/events are coming up for you soon?
I have three works submitted to a group show called 'killing me softly’ which is at Z gallery 86 Abbercrombie st Chippendale and opens this Sat Nov 7th. Before long I can see myself aiming at a solo show somewhere interesting n some time in the realistic yet foreseeable future. In the meantime i will try and hustle myself into as many shows as i can. Maybe even drop some stuff on the streets again. Its been a while.
